With the introduction of the Kindle Fire Amazon.com has decided to take on the computer giant Apple and they are not using a sling shot. On Sept. 28, 2011 Amazon took the raps off its entry into the Apple iPad dominated computer tablet market, with a tablet that not only exhibits some of the features of its competitor but offers it at half the price. The Kindle Fire sells for $199, while the iPad starts at $499 a bold strike that comes at the beginning of the holiday shopping season. The Kindle Fire will be available for sale starting on November 15th.

The Amazon Kindle Fire sports a 7 inch display which falls a couple inches short of the iPad's display but depending on how much viewing space you need you should find it functional. The Fire uses a state of the art dual-core processor the TI OMAP 4 as compared to Apple's A5 dual-core processor. The speed of these two processor's check in at 1Ghz so nothing is lost in a comparison of processor speeds. The Fire features 8GB of storage and does not offer the option of increasing memory where the iPad does. However Amazon offers free online storage through the Amazon Cloud, for all your digital content accessed via Amazon.

The Amazon Silk is an innovative cloud accelerated browser that splits the work of webpage loading between two interfaces thus making loading webpages a breeze as well as conserving the life of the battery. One of the unique features of the tablet that cannot be offered by most tablet manufacturers is that the purchaser can access the massive media content that Amazon can dole out. They offer access to over 100,000 movies and TV programs, endless numbers of reading material, games and the like. You can view magazines in vivid color displayed over 16 million colors via the touchscreen. The Fire weighs in at 413 grams or 14.6 ounces for the uninitiated. The battery life reaches 8 hours if you are reading books, a little less for continued video use.

It's Wi-Fi capable so you can read e-mail and just about anything you might ordinarily do on the web. It accesses hotspots and Wi-Fi networks that feature 802.11b,802.11n and 802.11g. The Kindle Fire tablet runs on the Android operating system and that gives users access to Google's Android Apps Market. So though the Apple store touts a few more offerings than Amazon in the Apps department, Android Apps will not allow the Fire user to feel neglected.

It probably comes as no surprise that Amazon is set to launch the Kindle Fire Tablet in November. One big question seems to be how it compares to the iPad. Maybe the question to be asked should be how it will be used or what do you really need from a Tablet. Often times shiny new objects blind us, and we make poor choices. There is no doubt that the iPad is an impressive shiny toy! But will you really use its many features? So, is it a need, will its many features really be used or is it just another gadget that we want?

Now let's consider the alternate: the Kindle Fire Tablet is small and can easily be carried in a pocket or a purse. It can be held in one hand, movies can be viewed in true widescreen on the 7" color Touchscreen, and it is well made. It is extremely user friendly, and at $199 it is more affordable than the iPad. On the other hand, it does not have the same features as the iPad, but this is where you really need to get honest and think about personal needs when purchasing a Tablet.

So what is missing from the Kindle Fire? It does not have a camera which means no video chatting. It does not have Bluetooth technology which means no wireless connection to a separate keyboard. It does not have access to the thousands of apps found with the iPad.

The Fire does focus on Amazon content. If your primary use will be reading books and magazines, watching movies, checking email and browsing the Web, this may be the ideal tool. It does have access to some games and apps. Personally I have considered and then reconsidered the purchase of an iPad but realistically don't need access to the thousands of apps found on the iPad. For me, the Kindle Fire Tablet should be the perfect fit.

In reality, the Kindle Fire Tablet and the iPad cannot be honestly compared. It would be like comparing a Granny Smith apple (used for baking pies) to a Red Delicious apple (ready to eat). Both are apples but they serve different needs and purposes, and so it is with the Kindle. It fills an entirely different niche; not everyone needs the full featured iPad. Providing a Tablet with most of the commonly used features at a reasonable price makes a lot of sense. By the way, saving about $300 is high on my list of pros. So, let's look at the con's...

7" screen -

Personally, I find this to be a plus, due to the easy of use and the lighter weight. But when compared side by side
to the 10" iPad, some may like the larger display. If you don't have to hold it for very long (ex. if you have a stand for it), then you may decided you like the larger screen better.

No microphone or lens -

If you're big into video chat or taking photos with your larger devices, then this may be a draw-back for you
and something to consider. (Although, I don't know of many people who hold up their 10" screens to try to snap a shot.)

No 3G -

With most people on the free Wi-Fi networks that are just about everywhere these days, downloading their movies, books and music, the 3G shouldn't be an issue. But again, if your into the video chat, you may want it.

Amazon has officially announced the release of the Kindle Fire, a color ebook reader that doubles as a tablet PC. Barnes and Noble released their Nook Color, a similar device, last holiday season. Taking a look at the main features of the Kindle Fire and Nook Color, one sees that there are a few glaring differences. One can see that Barnes and Noble offers 729 apps versus 16,638 apps at Amazon. This reflects the main difference between the two devices, in the way that Amazon just offers more content than Barnes and Noble.

Barnes and Noble has made it clear from the beginning that the Nook Color is a "color ebook reader" and they want to focus on the reading with their device. There has been customer complaints that it is slow to respond with certain things such as watching videos online. Again, it's a color ebook reader. It excels with reading magazines and other color publications.

Amazon aims to take a slightly different approach with the Kindle Fire. They advertise the device as more of a tablet PC than just a color ebook reader. This is evident with the extensive discussion about the new "Silk" web browser, according to Amazon, is a much faster mobile web browsing experience that uses Cloud technology to aid in web page load time.

Cloud Storage vs On Device Storage

Another big difference between the Fire and Nook Color is the way content is stored on the device, or off the device. Nook Color offers 8 GB of on-device storage out of the box, with the ability to expand storage up to 32 GB with an SD card. The Fire is different with 8 GB on-device storage out of the box, with unlimited use of the Amazon EC2 Cloud to backup and store as many files as the user needs or wants.

When comparing the Kindle Fire vs Nook Color, one can see there are many differences despite looking like very similar devices at first glance. Amazon's device could be seen as more a Tablet PC than Barnes and Noble's device which is a self declared color ebook reader.

When we invest in a Kindle, we have an infinite amount of books at our fingertips. However, like any machine, it is liable to break and damage. Yet, there are some simple ways we can protect our Kindle.
