Labels: , , , ,

If you are looking for a tablet and not a big fan of the iPad, then you should consider getting a Samsung Galaxy Tab. This Android-based tablet made its debut at IFA 2010 in Berlin. It was and still is considered as a serious competitor to the Apple iPad. The tablet runs the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system and features a 7 inch (180 mm) TFT-LCD touchsreen display, Wi-Fi capability, Swype input system, 1.0 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 Hummingbird processor, and dual cameras. Those sold outside the US support phone functionality, while the US version can still download video conference applications such as Tango.

The casing of the Samsung Galaxy Tab is made of plastic. At 380 g, it is lighter than metal-bodied tablets. Unlike Samsung's Galaxy S phones that are equipped with AMOLED display, the tablet features a 7 inch LCD TFT touchscreen display that has a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. It comes with 2 GB internal memory, but you can expand the memory up to 32 GB using a microSD card. The Samsung Galaxy Tab is powered by a 1 GHz Cortex-A8 Hummingbird processor that supports a combination of 512 MB of RAM and PowerVR SGX540 graphics processor.

The Dual Camera feature consists of a 1.3 MP front facing camera for video calling and a 3.2 MP rear facing camera for photo and video. The front facing camera is equipped with autofocus that can be activated by pressing the virtual shutter button. The image stitching feature is able to combine eight pictures into one. There are five shooting modes to choose from: Single Shot, Panorama, Continuous, Smile Shot, and Self Shot. Pictures will be geotagged automatically thanks to the internal GPS receiver.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab supports 3G connectivity via GSM, CDMA, and HSPA (HSUPA) networks. Additionally, it also has 802.11n Wi-Fi, a GPS chip, and Bluetooth 3.0. It is able to play various HD video formats such as DivX, XviD, H.263, H.264, MPEG4, and many more. On the other hand, the tablet comes standard with a multitude of software including email and instant messaging applications, calendar, e-reading applications (Kobo for e-books, PressDisplay for e-newspapers, and Zinio for e-magazines), and ThinkFree Office Mobile for viewing and editing Microsoft Office documents.

You can get one from major online retailers for as low as $299.99. If you want a bigger tablet, you can opt for the recently released 10.1 inch Samsung Galaxy Tab which runs the Android 3.1 Honeycomb operating system.
